Years of large-scale ongoing displacement, housing destruction, and inaccessibility caused by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, have created a severe housing crisis across the country. Mandatory evacuations remain ongoing across frontline and border regions, affecting hundreds of settlements. Evacuation orders have been frequently issued in response to escalating insecurity and shifting frontlines. The following brief takes a closer look at the living conditions in the areas of internal displacement and their impact on civilian safety. It lays out key protection risks and concerns that civilians are facing, as well as recommendations for maintaining and/or improving their safety amidst displacement.

  • cover page: Trauma Healing for IS-Affected Communities in Iraq Key for Lasting Peace

The legacy of trauma in Iraq, particularly in Ninewa after the IS occupation, continues to hinder social cohesion and peacebuilding. Unresolved trauma fuels cycles of violence, making mental health a critical concern. Addressing trauma healing is essential for community recovery, reconciliation, and sustainable peace. Locally-led initiatives play a key role in bridging gaps in Iraq’s stabilization efforts and ensuring the effectiveness of the Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) nexus. NP’s community-level engagement has often proven impactful in fostering healing and resilience.

  • Cover of a Nonviolent Peaceforce issue brief titled “Psychosocial Protection in Humanitarian Crises: A Proactive Response to Emotional and Traumatic Stress,” published April 2026. The design features the NP logo and text overlaying a photograph of a person standing in a flooded landscape at sunset, with a partially submerged swing set in the distance. The image evokes the emotional impact of crisis, with a caption noting an assessment in Kherson, Ukraine during winter conditions.

The physical safety and mental health of people experiencing violence are deeply intertwined. Conflict and violence generate high levels of psychological distress due to direct threats to safety and human rights. Cases abound of unaddressed trauma fueling cycles of violence or reducing capacities for civic engagement and self-protection. Effective protection efforts need to integrate responses to these mental health challenges to be sustainable, effective, and ethical.

  • At NP, a holistic Duty of Care framework embeds physical, technical, psychosocial, and operational safety measures into the design and delivery of our work. NP’s Duty of Care approach has been shaped most clearly through experience in high-intensity conflict settings such as Ukraine. Yet, we’re finding that the principles underpinning the approach are transferable across diverse operational environments. Our latest briefing explores how we are adapting the Duty of Care package across varying conflict landscapes, from Ukraine, DRC, Iraq, Myanmar, to South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, and within the United States.
