Our Commitment to Web Accessibility
Web Accessibility
Nonviolent Peaceforce is committed to providing an accessible website experience for all users of all abilities, including those who rely on assistive technologies like screen readers, screen enlargement software, and alternative keyboard input devices to navigate the web.
Ongoing Efforts to Ensure Accessibility
We follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 as our guiding principle for determining accessibility. These are internationally agreed-upon standards that cover a wide range of recommendations and best practices for making content useable. As we add new pages and functionality to our website, all designs, code, and content entry practices are checked against these standards.
Website accessibility is an ongoing process. We test content and features—continually for WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance and regularly for Level AAA compliance—and remediate any issues to ensure we meet or exceed the standards. Testing of our website is performed by our team members and our Cornershop Creative developers using industry-standard tools such as UserWay and PowerMapper.
In addition to testing for accessible documents, PDFs, and non-text content, our tests cover the following issues:
- HTML: Ensuring proper HTML structure and language identification for accessibility.
- Design & CSS: Enhancing visual design and layout for improved accessibility.
- Embedded Content: Ensuring accessibility of multimedia and embedded elements.
- Links: Improving accessibility and usability by ensuring descriptive link text, providing accessible names, indicating links that open in new tabs, and ensuring each link has unique and descriptive text.
Accessibility Features On Our Website
The following is a list of items we have included in our website to improve its accessibility:
- UserWay accessibility widget: This is available to users by clicking the button on the bottom left corner of any page on Nonviolent Peaceforce's website.
- Our Sitemap: this is available in the footer of our site to help users find content easily.
- Alternative text descriptions for non-text content: In July 2024, Cornershop Creative's AI-Powered Alt Tag Generator was used to add alt text to 1,100+ images as remediation. As of August 2024, 100% of image files have alt text and we are committed to upholding this standard, including conducting regular audits.
Where We're Improving
In our efforts to bring our website up to standard, we are targeting the following areas:
- PDF documents: To remediate our previously uploaded PDFs and set standards moving forward, we are exploring solutions for making PDFs accessible for screen readers, including the option of publishing the content on a companion web page or in an accessible word doc.
- Aria Labels: Enhancing accessibility by providing labels for elements that assistive technologies rely on to convey information to users.
- HTML structural rules: We are dedicated to maintaining a well-structured HTML document that is both accessible and user-friendly, including fixing main element structure, aligning headings with correct heading tags, and adding language attribute tags.
- Design elements: Auditing our design elements to ensure accessibility, including clickable target sizes, contrast ratios, or justified text templates.
This is part of our broader effort to make everyone's experience at Nonviolent Peaceforce a welcoming and enjoyable one. Please note that while we make every effort to provide information accessible for all users, we cannot guarantee the accessibility of third party websites to which we may link.
