NP, A Part of History

Date: June 14, 2016

CollegeOn May 23rd, Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) joined Jane Addams, the Fellowship of Reconciliation, Code Pink, A.J. Muste, Veterans for Peace, the War Resisters League, and many more peacemakers in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection. This archives documents the history of the peace movement and is open to all. They have been gathering and preserving the historical legacy of peace and justice efforts from as early as 1815.

(Published June 14, 2016)

Since December, NP’s founding mother, Mary Lou Ott, coordinated staff and volunteers in gathering and sorting NP’s history that resulted in 21 boxes of material which Mary Lou, Clarkson Palmer, leader of NP Philadelphia Chapter, and Mel Duncan delivered to the Swarthmore archives. As Mary Lou and Mel drove the boxes over the 1200 mile route from Minneapolis to south of Philadelphia, they were aware that they were on a spiritual sojourn transporting a historical legacy that contained the hopes, dreams, aspirations, risks, financial contributions, and hard work of thousands. NP is part of an unfolding history that is transforming the way the world deals with violent conflict and bringing an end to war.
