Snapshots from Mykolaiv

Date: July 19, 2022

"I have two daughters that fled to Slovakia at the beginning of the war," Zina shared. "They asked me to come with them but what would I do there? I am 75 years old, I do not know the language. So I live by myself with our cat - my daugthers named him Balushka. He is the man of the house, I have conversations with him. There is nobody else to check in on me."

NP team assisted Zina as she collapsed at one of the distribution points due to extreme heat and exhaustion. NP was able to provide immediate care and accompanied Zina back to her apartment on the outskirts of the city.

At the end of May, the NP team traveled to visit civilians in Kharkiv and Chuhuiv. NP’s Joachim Kleinmann shares an update:

"The NP Ukraine team is conducting an exploratory mission in Mykolaiv, Ukraine. The team is identifying local organizations that are specifically providing aid for highly vulnerable populations.

In the past few months, Russian Artillery has been targeting key points of infrastructure, including desalinization plants as well as water treatment centers. NP’s unique responsibility in this is to be the bridge—the bridge to fill the gap between the local civilian-led organizations and the humanitarian structures that will be able to provide necessary service provision."

Read the team's Mykolaiv Snapshot, which presents key conclusions from a rapid protection assessment conducted in Mykolaiv in July 2022 (Ukrainian version here). It builds on analysis and recommendations published earlier in May 2022 as part of a broader assessment of protection needs and responses in Ukraine (read the Preliminary Findings report here).
