Commemoration of Peace Deal in Mindanao Reaffirms Commitment to Agreement

Date: April 4, 2016

The Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) was signed on 27th March 2014 between the Government of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) as a stepping stone towards the creation of a peaceful government in Mindanao. Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) in the Philippines was also present at the signing of the CAB. The theme for this year’s commemoration of the signing of the significant step was: "Stand up for Peace! Long live the CAB!"

Two years down the line, peace in Mindanao seems imminent, with statements positively speculating: "MILF will continue to seek and work for the final peaceful settlement of the conflict in Mindanao." NP has been actively engaged in the Civilian Protection Component of the International Monitoring Team (IMT) in Mindanao for six years now, using unarmed strategies to advocate for Human Rights of non-combatants.

Advocating for peace proactively and nonviolently, Nonviolent Peaceforce in the Phillipines was thanked for its efforts and supports during the peace process by MILF Chairman Al Haj Murad Ebrahim at the commemoration. He included NP in his remarks: “We also will never forget the tireless efforts and support of all the State and Non-State actors that compose the International Contact Group (ICG), the Government of the United Kingdom, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Japan... The Asia Foundation, Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue... Nonviolent Peaceforce, Mindanao Peoples Caucus, [and] Mindanao Human Rights Action Center... and to the numerous world organizations and countries that have signified strong support to [the agreement].” Nonviolent Peaceforce is eagerly awaiting reports of progress following the commemoration.
