Reassessing Our Social Media Presence
Our Approach
We engage with social media platforms based on clear principles: safety, ethical data practices, and constructive dialogue. Platforms that allow us to implement safeguards—such as controlling AI features, protecting user privacy, and fostering meaningful discussions—remain part of our outreach and advocacy efforts.
However, not all platforms meet even the most basic standards for responsible digital engagement. Some now pose significant risks without offering meaningful benefits for our work.
- Privacy and AI Concerns: Evolving policies on certain platforms raise serious risks around user data misuse, including using personal data for AI training without consent. Lack of transparency and user control further undermine digital security.
- Rise in Harmful Content: Weak or inconsistent moderation policies on some platforms have contributed to a surge in hate speech, misinformation, and other harmful content. This erodes social cohesion and creates unsafe online spaces.
- Lack of Transparency & Accountability: The financial and political entanglements of major social platforms raise concerns about data-sharing practices, access to sensitive information, and governance structures that prioritize profit over public interest.
We initially believed maintaining a presence on all major platforms would allow us to engage constructively and advocate for change. However, when a platform does not provide meaningful ways to align with ethical digital practices, continued engagement risks signaling implicit support for policies that compromise privacy, enable harmful content, or undermine constructive discourse.
Rethinking Your Own Social Media Engagement
We encourage others to reflect on their presence on digital platforms by asking:
- Privacy & Security – What control do you have over your data?
- AI Ethics – How does the platform use AI, and can you opt out?
- Financial & Governance Transparency – Who benefits from the platform’s policies?
- Social Impact – Does the platform enable healthy, constructive dialogue?
We remain committed to engaging with our audiences online in ways that foster meaningful dialogue, cultivate digital safety, and drive real-world impact. We invite our community to connect with us on other platforms and continue the conversation.
