The Situation in South Sudan - January 1, 2014

Date: January 2, 2014

IMG 3210In Lakes State, on the banks of the Nile River, an estimated 50,000 men, women and children are sleeping under trees amongst rag tag piles of luggage. They have crossed the Nile on long boats escaping the ongoing fighting in the town of Bor and surrounding area. Many have had family members killed and almost everyone has lost their homes in the wide scale destruction of Bor.

Yesterday, NP's Country Director, Tiffany Easthom, traveled to the village of Minkoman, Lakes State as a member of an Integrated Rapid Needs Assessment team organized by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to conduct the protection component of the assessment.

In response to the urgent situation, NP's Lake State team will move from Rumbek to Awerial to meet the urgent protection needs of this vulnerable, conflict affected community.

You can protect civilians who are living in or fleeing violent conflict. Your contribution will transform the world's response to conflict.
