Ukraine
Protecting civilians and partnering with local organizations for holistic response across Ukraine’s frontline, de-occupied, and underserved areas.
a clear call to action:
The need for protection in Ukraine
As the emergency situation continues and the conflict deepens, communities are increasingly in need of protection, access to life-saving information, aid, and assistance.
The humanitarian response in Ukraine is largely carried out by local Ukrainian organisations that experience impeded access to direct funding and receive limited Duty of Care support, all while facing extreme safety and security risks.
High intensity conflict creates large scale displacement which leads to exacerbation of protection risks, especially for at-risk populations and persons with special needs. Availability of essential information, evacuation, and post-evacuation services are critical for timely and informed decisions about safe relocation. Protracted conflict has immediate and long-term consequences which impact society’s resilience and cohesion.
Our response
- 80+ protection projects implemented
- 160+ local partners enrolled in NP’s programme
Alongside the frontline partners who make our HAVEN project possible, here’s what we’ve accomplished together (as of April 2026):
- 24,000+ people evacuated and connect to medical care, shelter, and other support resources.
- 14,000+ people supported in transit centres
- 31,000+ Quick-Run-Bag leaflets distributed
- 8,411 hotline calls processed
Together in community
NP’s Ukraine program began in 2022. Our Head of Mission for Ukraine is Anastasiya Marchuk.

NP’s work in Ukraine
NP works along the safe passage route (displacement corridor), de-occupied, and frontline areas in south and east of Ukraine, providing unarmed protection to civilians, most often in partnership with local actors.
By proactively engaging with war-affected communities and response actors, NP teams have facilitated enhanced and safer access to humanitarian services for populations with special needs in underserved and hard to reach areas.
NP also works to improve the safety and security of local organisations and first responders while supporting them to continue and expand their civilian protection efforts in Ukraine, paving the way for early recovery efforts. This includes providing local partners with life insurance, psychological support, personal protective equipment (like protective vests), extensive subgrants, drone mitigation support, and numerous protection trainings.
The future of NP’s work in Ukraine
NP will continue to focus on addressing urgent civilian protection needs for at-risk communities across eastern and southern frontline Oblasts while helping them strengthen their self-protection mechanisms. This is achieved through ensuring equal access to services and reliable information, provision of context-relevant protective equipment and skills, and enhanced coordination. Through community preparedness and social cohesion support, NP will contribute to strengthening community resilience to any context change – from escalation to post-conflict transformation and peacebuilding.
➔ Guiding this work is NP’s Community Preparedness assessment, which highlights local Ukrainian perspectives on today’s tensions and future recovery.
Strengthening Communities Through Veterans Reintegration
As Ukrainians continue to return home from the frontlines, there has been an increasing need to create the conditions for veterans to reintegrate into civilian life with dignity. Alongside local partners like Aid4Heroes, Nonviolent Peaceforce is working to ease this transition so that individuals that have served in the military are supported and local communities can thrive in peace.
Protecting the protectors
Across Ukraine, local volunteers and civilians are protecting their communities from frontline drone attacks while international actors shift the risk onto them. NP is pushing to change that by equipping frontline networks on the ground and pressing for shared duty-of-care standards and funding. Duty of Care support provided to local humanitarians:
bullet-proof vests and helmets
people trained in first aid
people received Drone Awareness Training
frequency analysers distributed to frontline partners
volunteers receive life and accident insurance
