14 October 2025, Geneva, Switzerland – The UCP Academy, powered by Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP), is proud to announce the launch of the Changemakers Programme—a global initiative designed to scale up civilian-led initiatives while equipping participants with the tools to integrate Unarmed Civilian Protection (UCP) strategies into their work. The programme will support leaders in protection, peacebuilding, and safety across diverse conflict contexts around the world, to help communities and organisations strengthen their capacities and create opportunities for collaboration.
Changemakers is open to individuals worldwide, including practitioners, researchers, artists, and policy advocates committed to advancing civilian-led protection initiatives. Selected participants will receive training, mentorship, and opportunities to collaborate on real-world projects that enhance the ability of communities to protect themselves and others amid violent conflict and displacement.
"Right now, as communities face unprecedented challenges from conflict and displacement, developing strong, locally-led protection initiatives has never been more critical. Through mentorship, training, and opportunities for micro-grants, Changemakers gain the guidance, skills, and support they need to lead UCP-inspired projects that strengthen community resilience, protect civilians, and foster sustainable peace."
— Kristina Preiksaityte, Global Programme Manager
Applications for the first cohort are open as of today, with the programme officially launching in 2026.
The Changemakers Programme is made possible with generous support from the Kingdom of the Netherlands Embassy. The UCP Academy itself is supported through collaboration with the Creating Safer Space (CSS) research network at Aberystwyth University, providing academic expertise and participatory research methodologies that complement NP’s decades-long experience on the frontlines in conflict-affected regions.
