Our Work In Ukraine

The need for protection in Ukraine

As the emergency situation continues and the conflict persists, communities are increasingly in need of protection, and access to life-saving information, aid, and assistance.

Even though international actors reestablished their presence in Ukraine in early 2022, the bulk of humanitarian response in de-occupied and frontline areas continue to be carried out by local Ukrainian organizations and informal volunteer networks—all with little support from the international community.

From children to people with disabilities and illnesses, to elderly people and those in hospitals or institutions, there are many who are either displaced, unable, or unwilling to evacuate, putting them at direct risk of harm from the conflict. Furthermore, these people also have limited access to essential services such as food, medicine, or shelter, which are often distributed by international actors in central locations only. Again, local Ukrainians take on the risk to distribute this much needed aid to those in harm’s way and close to the frontlines.

NP's work in Ukraine

By NP works along the safe passage route (displacement corridor), de-occupied and frontline areas in south and north of Ukraine, providing unarmed protection to civilians, most often in partnership with local volunteer collectives and organizations.

By proactively engaging with war-affected communities and response actors, NP teams have facilitated enhanced and safer access to humanitarian services for populations with special needs in  underserved and hard to reach areas. We disseminate information to civilians escaping violence on available essential humanitarian services available to them. We evacuate people from the frontlines and provide safe houses and accompaniment to needed services.

NP also works to improve the safety and security of local organizations and first responders while supporting them to continue and expand their civilian protection efforts in Ukraine, paving the way for early recovery efforts. This has included providing local partners who are bearing the brunt of the emergency response with life insurance, pyschological support, personal protective equipment (like protective vests), fuel, volunteer stipends, and numerous protection themed trainings (early warning early response, distribution safety, first aid training etc). At our volunteer hubs, local Ukrainians can access this wide variety of support. NP both increases the safety of those doing the riskiest work to protect others, while providing the care to sustain their efforts.

The future of NP's work in Ukraine

NP will continue to focus on addressing urgent civilian protection needs for vulnerable communities across Kharkiv, Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Kherson Oblasts. The team will continue to provide protection for communities in hard-to-reach places and connect them to humanitarian services like food, water, and medicine.
