Unarmed Civilian Protection Course in Testing

Years of work are coming to an exciting point of fruition this month as the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) goes through a trial run in final preparation for the Unarmed Civilian Protection (UCP) eLearning course. The course is scheduled to launch online this fall, making the most updated training materials for UCP available worldwide. The course, being tested by 26 supporters, donors, practitioners, and academics, consists of five learning modules and will take about 40 hours of work to complete.

(Published July 18, 2016) Over the last two years, Mel Duncan, Ellen Furnari (author of Wielding Nonviolence in the Midst of Violence), and other leading UCP practitioners and Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) staff have been working to develop material that communicates the need for UCP and outlines successful methodologies used by UCP practitioners around the world ̶ in a digestible, yet academically rigorous course. By making UCP strategies and methodologies available to a wide audience through this online course, UNITAR and NP are together achieving a great step toward changing the way the world responds to conflict.
